CT Tech Job Responsibilities

When you take on a role as a CT technologist, you’ll play a key role in diagnostic imaging and patient care. Typical responsibilities for CT Tech jobs include:

  • Preparing and positioning patients for computed tomography (CT) scans and ensuring their safety throughout the procedure.
  • Operating CT equipment, adjusting controls and parameters, and monitoring image quality in real time.
  • Collaborating with radiologists and imaging teams to produce accurate, high-quality images that support diagnosis and treatment.
  • Maintaining imaging equipment, performing routine quality checks, cleaning and calibrating machines, and coordinating repairs when needed.
  • Managing patient records, imaging logs, contrast administration documentation (when applicable), and adhering to radiation safety protocols.
  • Providing patient education and communicating clearly about what the scan involves, preparing them for the procedure and post-scan care when relevant.
  • Charting and reviewing images, assisting in the workflow of the imaging department, and sometimes helping with scheduling or image archiving.

These duties can vary depending on the setting (hospital, outpatient center, imaging lab), shift (days, evenings, weekends), and specialty (trauma, oncology, pediatrics). A career as a CT Technologist gives you the chance to work at the forefront of medical imaging, where you can help clinicians identify conditions, monitor treatments, and make life-changing diagnoses.

The median salary for CT Technologist's is approximately $88K, with entry-level salaries around $70K and senior roles up to $120K or more. Because of the variations by geographic region, facility type, shift differentials, and years of experience, actual salaries can be significantly higher or somewhat lower.

  • Certification from a recognized body, such as the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in radiography plus a CT post-primary credential.
  • State licensure as required in your state of practice. Some states require licensure for CT technologists; even when not mandated, having licensure is a strong differentiator.
  • Hands-on clinical experience during your training, including experience with CT equipment, patient prep, contrast protocols, image acquisition, radiation safety.
  • Continuing education and credential maintenance are key. Many imaging centers favor CT Technologists who pursue advanced certifications, cross-train in multiple modalities, or maintain specialty credentials.
