RRT Job Responsibilities

Registered Respiratory Therapists play a vital role in patient care by helping individuals with breathing and cardiopulmonary disorders. While many duties overlap with Certified Respiratory Therapists (CRTs), RRTs hold advanced certification and greater clinical responsibilities.

Common Registered Respiratory Therapist job duties include:

  • Collecting and analyzing patient samples such as sputum, blood, and breath specimens.
  • Assisting physicians in diagnosing, treating, and managing pulmonary diseases.
  • Operating and managing ventilators and other life-support equipment.
  • Assisting with intubation and airway management procedures.

In addition, RRTs may:

  • Administer and monitor respiratory treatments and therapies.
  • Supervise Certified Respiratory Therapists (CRTs) and respiratory technicians.
  • Educate patients and families on respiratory health and treatment plans.

Registered Respiratory Therapist Qualifications

To become a Registered Respiratory Therapist, candidates must first earn the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential by passing the Therapist Multiple-Choice (TMC) Examination. Those who achieve a high enough score become eligible to take the Clinical Simulation Examination (CSE).

Passing both exams earns the RRT credential, which is recognized nationwide as the highest standard of professional achievement in respiratory care. Many facilities prefer or require RRT certification for advanced roles and leadership positions.

Registered Respiratory Therapist Salaries

The median Registered Respiratory Therapist salary in the United States is approximately $80,450 per year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistic (BLS). Most RRT salaries range between $57K and $110K annually.

Factors that can impact your earning potential as a Registered Respiratory Therapist include:

  • Years of clinical experience
  • Level of education and certifications
  • Work setting (hospital, outpatient, long-term care, etc.)
  • Geographic location
  • Area of specialization

Travel RRT jobs may also offer additional benefits such as housing stipends, completion bonuses, and higher hourly pay.

RRT Employment Outlook

Employment opportunities for Registered Respiratory Therapists continue to grow rapidly. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for RRTs is projected to increase by 12% through 2034, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.

This growth is driven by an aging population, advances in respiratory care technology, and an increased focus on treating chronic conditions such as COPD, asthma, and respiratory infections.

Registered Respiratory Therapist Specialty Areas

Many RRTs choose to specialize in a particular area of respiratory care to advance their careers, expand their skill set, and increase earning potential. Popular RRT specialties include:

  • Long-Term Care — Work in rehabilitation hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, or other extended-care environments.
  • Neonatal and Pediatric Care — Provide respiratory support for newborns and children with pulmonary conditions.
  • Transport Respiratory Therapy — Assist patients during emergency surface or air transport situations.
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation — Help patients regain lung function and improve quality of life after illness or surgery.
  • Polysomnography — Focus on sleep medicine and diagnosing sleep-related breathing disorders.
